There is an old saying that the dog is mans’ best friend. This is a saying that should be taken further however expanding beyond the canines and extend to being said that any pet is mans’ best friend.
The bond and mutual love that forms between the pet and its caregiver is powerful. It seems that the love that is showered upon a pet is distinct from any other types of love. Perhaps this is due to the fact that there are no demands by the pet other than to be cared for in a loving way. In return they reciprocate with an unconditional love.
After this unique friendship has been formed there is a tremendous sense of loss when the pet dies. Often the pet owners that are grieving feel embarrassed at being so emotional over a pet. Anyone that has had the experience of owning a pet and even further losing one totally understands the pain of the loss.
It is important though that after a period of time the grieving should be put to rest and consideration for a new pet should be given. In the first few days of the loss the most spoken statement is there is no replacement for the lost pet. This is true, just like there are no replacements for lost loved ones. There is however, another opportunity awaiting you to care and love another pet and form a distinct bond just with that one.
At first you may feel that you would be being unfair to a new pet because you just can’t feel the same towards this one as you did the old one. That’s very true, but what you will feel is something new, different and wonderful because this pet is unique.
If you feel that it is just not the time to go and get another pet of the same species then you may want to consider another species or even breed within the same pet family.
Do yourself a favor and when you are picking your new pet do not try and replicate the old one. Meaning don’t look for a dog of the exact same color and size for example. You are only extending your loss by doing this.
Give yourself time to warm up to your new friend. Enjoy and discover all the new things that this pet can bring to your life and appreciate the experience for what it is which is new.
You will soon find that no you haven’t forgotten about your old friend, but she/he has been filed in the fond memories chamber of your heart. Giving you time and space to enjoy what the new friend has to bring.
By keeping your thoughts in order and accepting your loss you are soon going to find that there is a whole new world of friendship waiting for you with your new pet.
