OK, so maybe some of you will consider this a diet. Also, there are a few of you who won’t be able to pull this off (that is, if you already follow this rule). It is however in my opinion the easiest weight loss – so disclaimers aside, here’s the one simple step – stop drinking soft drinks! I mean especially soft drinks such as Coca-Cola or Pepsi. Beer can also fit into this category, but I am assuming that you can’t go through as much beer in a day as you can soda. These soft drinks are high in calories, which can exclusively be attributed to sugar content. And this sugar as you know is not complex carbohydrates but instead simple ones- quickly absorbed into the blood stream. Once absorbed, if the energy from these sugars is not used the liver and pancreas convert it to fat. It’s an easy source of extra calories if you don’t pay attention.
There are other advantages too. A side effect of the carbonation of soft drinks is the creation of carbonic acid. This carbonic acid has a tendency to erode enamel, leading to general weakening of your teeth. You could think of the effects like tiny, tiny, tiny caves in your teeth. The sugar from the soft drink then fills these caves, creating an ideal environment for bacteria. The end result is cavities. Coca-cola, however, adds phosphoric acid (it adds a sour taste which surveys say makes the drink tastier). Phosphoric acid is significantly more acidic than carbonic acid, and gives coke useful properties such as the ability to remove corrosion from metal. This is great if you want to (in my case) remove rust from an old bike. However, I don’t think something that can strip rust is the best choice for a beverage.
In my case, my dentist recommended stopping soft drinks because of the numerous problems with cavities I was having. I didn’t do it for dieting or weight loss. The weight I lost was just a side effect, although admittedly a fantastic one. And losing five pounds over just a few days (five for me) is definitely the most effective short-term weight loss strategy I know about. The weight comes off quickly and stays off so long as you stay off the soft drinks. No diet I know of can claim that you can lose a pound a day. And no exercise either! Get out there and try it out now!
