A Few Mini Reviews – Terminator, Mozy, and HP Computers

So I’d like to touch on a few things I’ve been dealing with lately, and I wanted to give you some brief impressions on them.  Basically, my thoughts on these are brief enough that I can do a review, but not a whole article on one (unless I REALLY stretch, and no one really likes that).

Terminator: Salvation – Well, I have mixed feelings on this one, even if I did like the movie.  My misgivings stem from the fact that it’s a departure from previous Terminator movies – this one is set in the future, and involves no direct time travel (although it does deal with paradoxes, though not in detail).  The lead is also no longer Arnold, as you all know.  I DO really like how Christian Bale portrays John Conner – he had a very old-school action hero feel to him.  I can totally see John Conner action figures hitting the stores sometime soon.  The conflicting nature of the new terminator was also a plot point I really enjoyed.  Unfortunately, the movie had a slightly rushed feel to it – I think they could have spent more time fleshing out the world and characters.  Most of the supporting cast seems a little dry too.  The movie overall was great though – Lots of moments where I was thinking “OMG did that really just happen?  WOW!”  I’d recommend it to anyone, especially of course Terminator fans!

Mozy – If you’ve been watching Hulu, I know you’ve seen ads for this backup service.  Well, I’ve been using it, and recently lost all my data.  Unfortunately, instead of restoring all my files, it wiped all of them (much to my chagrin).  Needless to say, I was less than a happy camper when this happened.  I’d recommend this service to someone who just wants to back up their Office files – there’s better ways to back up emails and bookmarks.  And anything else larger you would want to get an external hard disk for – they’re reliable and you can get them with huge amounts of space.  Unfortunately they’re a good bit more expensive, but I think this extra cost is worth it.  Go for the disk, not Mozy.

HP Computers – As I mentioned before, I’ve had two hard disk crashes this year, both of them on the HP machine I bought in August.  Needless to say, I’m no longer sure about the quality of HP machines (two hard disk failures in a year is supposed to border on statistical impossibility).  Fortunately their customer service and technical support has been nothing short of excellence.  In fact, it’s been so good that while I’m not sure that I would be a repeat customer, I wouldn’t give them a negative review.  It’s that good folks.  I have been connected to an outsourced Indian company, but usually even then they are knowledgeable and helpful.  Hopefully if you do buy one of their products, you will not have any problems and therefore not get to meet these nice people.

Well, I hope you enjoyed these mini-reviews!
