As I mention a lot, I think it’s absolutely vital to nurture your creative side. Logic and reason is all well and good, but I think it’s really important to work on the other areas of your being. Feed your innovation and intuition. Live a little! It’s also important to do this in a way that’s rewarding to you – because if you don’t, what’s the benefit?
Take me for example. I adore music. I literally listen to it all of the time, from when I wake up to when I go to sleep, before dawn till after dusk. The only reason I stop is to converse with others, or when I have some other interaction where I can’t listen to music and function well. My drawing and painting ability on the other hand is extremely weak. It’s to the point where if I even doodle I can get frustrated and stressed since my hand can’t draw what my mind envisions. As a result, I have a strong preference for music- related pursuits as opposed to other arts. I love singing, dancing, and playing instruments.
So what you have to do is identify these areas where you derive the maximum enjoyment. That should go without saying, because by now you should already know what they are. If not, go out into the world and experiment. Take dance classes, singing lessons, and art lessons. I’m confident you’ll quickly find one you like more than the others.
And my next point is the most important of all! Even if these artistic pursuits are “guilty pleasures,” indulge them! Don’t let other people tell you how to live your life – if you want to do something artistic, you should. There’s no harm in it, and you’ll feel much better for having created something. I so strongly disagree with the current mindset shared by many in America. This mindset I mention is the one where business and success is your highest priority, and curiosity and the arts be damned. I disagree with many peoples’ opinion that the arts are a frivolous pursuit.
Sure, artwork and music may not put food into a hungry child’s belly. But art has a power that transcends – it uplifts the human soul. So do me a favor – for 15 minutes today, instead of being productive, be unproductive. Doodle, scrapbook, draw, sketch, write, sing, dance, compose, paint, stencil, or even just muse for a little. And once you’re done, don’t throw your results out. Keep them – you might want to come back and resume your work at a later date. And while you’re at it, try visiting a local art gallery or art show. You might not “get it” (I don’t “get” a lot of art), but you can still enjoy someone else’s creation. It’s truly a pleasure!
