How to Live Below Your Means

Is it living within your means or living below your means? Well, living within your means entails being able to carter for all your needs without borrowing to consume. However, living below your means entails an even superior thing: to be able to consume, have some money to save and have much more to invest. Just as you would expect of a big organization, your financial plans should always be geared towards:

  • Increasing your revenue
  • Reducing your costs as much as you can

These may sound to be a bit too miserly or too obvious. However, they are necessary if you are to get the most out of your limited resources.

So, are you ready to start living below your means? Here we go:

Buy with cash

Buying with cash is one of the greatest weapons that you can have against impulsive buying. This is because with cash, you can never buy with money that you do not have. Again, if you make it your habit to carry money only when you need or just a small amount for any eventuality, you will always be forced to choose among the many “great” products that you’ll find in stores. This will greatly help you stick to your budget and will assist you in developing the self-discipline that is a must if you want to have a budget that will help you achieve you personal financial goals.

Stop the rat race

For generations, people have been trying to keep up with the Joneses. Grown-up men and women who would have otherwise laughed at this “childish behavior” in their children, find themselves in a rat race where they keep on competing to see who has the latest laptop.  To ensure that you live below your means, get rid of any intended purchases whose purpose is mainly to catch up with other people. The key to avoiding such competition is to base you budget on the things you need and want rather than on what you think the society wants

Use discounts when you can

You do not have to spend money when you can avoid it. There are many ways through which you can save money. This may include buying items during a sale or buying second hand commodities or buying using discount coupons. I recently got a $50 discount on a web hosting service by simply doing some research on the internet. If you take advantage of such offers, you can be surprised on the amount of money that you can save through buying less expensive commodities which have got the same value with their more expensive counterparts.

The aim of living below your budget is not saving money for its own sake. It has nothing to do with you being a miser (though you can be sure that many people will think of you as being one,) instead, it has got all to do with the simple fact that you need to take control of your life. This includes taking control of you expenses and allocating your money to areas that will give you the greatest value for your money
