So finals are coming, you waited until the last minute, and now the all nighters begin. You head down to the local quickie mart and pick yourself up some nice cold Maxi energy 3000’s. The label says it will give you feathered arms and guaranteed to make you fly like a bird. But… is it really good for you? If you look at the label it does say 200% vitamin a-z and 300% of some other stuff. The problem is, most of the time anything is over 100% of your daily vitamins usually means that it is too much. ?True, it may not kill you but it can definitely put a damper on the overall good life.
The biggest concern is the amount of caffeine they contain. They are more than twice that of your average coffee and more than three times that of what the FDA allows in soda pop. Energy drinks contain huge amounts of caffeine (so does cocaine by the way), as much as 280 mg per 8.4 oz serving (compared to something like 25mg in a can of coke). That’s according to a January 2007 article on the Boston globe’s site (http://www.boston.com/yourlife/health/fitness/articles/2007/01/29/are_energy_drinks_bad_for_you/). No wonder you think you can fly afterwards, your hands are shaking so much you might just start to levitate. True, some of you drink coffee all day long, and have a few triple mocha latte supreme, with extra whipping cream (now that sounds like the good life right there). However, you’re not doing it all at the same time. It may take you like 2-3 hours to down like 3 coffees or so. Your body is gradually dealing with it and you are not gettin’ the shakes.
Now I have done a little research for this post and I have discovered that energy drinks have not yet been proven to be that bad for you. There has not been any claims that it has given rats in California cancer, it has not been shown to contain any type of pig or fowl type flu symptoms. It just worries me a little. I mean kids today are downin’ these suckers like they are some kind of super power drink (hey, that’s how the hulk does it). Let’s not forget about your favorite watering hole on Friday nights. You almost can’t get a drink in a club without a mix of vodka and the bull. Which I think is completely genius by the way, from a marketing point of view of course. I mean we all know that alcohol makes you tired right? What better way to keep you alive and well, than pump you full of the juice. All I want to really say is, if you’re going to being downing these things, do it in moderation. Stick to one a day if you can, don’t drink if you are pregnant or think you may become pregnant, and if are having a hard believing it will not really make you fly. If you can’t live the good life without energy drinks, maybe you should take up yoga (uh oh, I feel another blog post coming).
