Volunteering is a great way to show someone you care. It is a way to give back to your community and lend a helping hand. You don’t have to have a special skill or talent to volunteer, just a little spare time will do. Volunteering can be done in many ways. You can join a club or organization that donates it’s time or resources. You can even just go down to senior service send and ask if you can help out. Even just spending a little time with someone that needs a companion is a great way to live the good life.
When you volunteer you are not only giving something to your community or changing a person’s life, you are changing yours. By volunteering you often get the feeling of accomplishment, it makes you feel good inside. Often times when people volunteer they learn new skills and meet new people as well. Just by spending a little extra time each week is all it really takes to learn something new. Volunteering is often the best way to get experience at something, something that can go on your resume as well. Who knows, by volunteering you may meet someone that potentially help your career as well.
If you choose to volunteer, start small. You can get really excited about the idea easy, and start making too many commitments. Try to take it slow, even though there may seem like a lot to do and you really enjoy it, the extra amount of work you are doing can cause you to get burned out quickly. It may just be easier to only commit to a couple of hours a week. More than likely you will always have work to do and it will be there when you have time. You don’t want to cause yourself to be stressed out over it, after all, you’re trying to live the good life.
It is really important to explain your background to the organizers so that they can put you in a place where your knowledge and experience can be useful. Don’t think that just because you have never had a job before makes you worthless. Often times your favorite hobby could be something that an organization needs. Tell the organizer about anything you may have done in high school, or what you do at home in your spare time. Your hobby may not be productive, but the basis of it could build into something else.
Even if you don’t have a hobby, or job, or experience at anything, you can still be useful. It doesn’t take much to pick up the handle of a soup spoon and pour someone a hot meal. It is not exactly brain surgery to sit down with an abused child and read them a book. If you have a heartbeat, you are useful to someone. In fact, it could be just sweeping up in someone’s yard. Sharing your life and spare time with someone can help them to live the good life.
