Find a Good Life

The Neighborhood Party

We had a neighborhood party today.  People from all over the neighborhood were there.  I didn’t know it was supposed to happen, but I heard the music.

I don’t like chocolate.

But I love music.  When I hear music, I can’t resist.  I call music my chocolate.

So I went to a park near my house.  Wow!  People all over the place.  I had my acrylic paints and some canvases with me, so I figured I’d get some painting done.

Guess what I found out?  Teenagers like my paintings.  I was painting, not paying attention to anyone.  I saw that a few people were taking advantage of the situation to try to sell things, and I didn’t want anyone to think I was trying to sell my paintings, so I just sat back, enjoyed the music and painted.

And a crowd of teens gathered.  We began talking, and I told them how much I usually sell my paintings for.  I could tell they didn’t have that much.

I like to earn money, like anyone does.

There are times when my version of a good life is to do something that makes people smile.  I would say that I like to spread beauty around.  But since I’m not positive just how beautiful some of my art is sometimes…

I told the kids gathered around me that because I know teenagers don’t always have a lot of money on hand, and because I just like seeing art get to people who like it, I would lower my prices a bit for them.  (Actually, I lowered the prices quite a bit.)

From one girl, I accepted a dollar and a half, with a promise to come water my plants one of these days.  A boy who looked about 16 years old paid the full two dollars I quoted for the painting he wanted, but he said he still wanted to come help me with yard work.  Who am I to quibble?  I said sure.  I took one painting with me, and painted two while I was there, and all three sold.  I was surprised.

I was even more surprised at how much they liked the paintings.

I am happy that I was able to add a facet to their lives, though.  The 16 year old boy said the painting he bought was perfect for his bedroom.  I don’t usually paint in the abstract style, but the atmosphere seemed to call for it— a guitar on two panels.  One panel had the body of the guitar.  The other panel had the neck, with stems branching off of it, and leaves growing out of the guitar’s neck.  It was pure emotion.  The others were a white background with an African daisy, and a blue-black background with a turquoise and pink dahlia.

Kind of weird stuff, but I was feeling kind of weird today.  And painting helps me get my emotions back into balance.  It’s one of my ways of having the kind of good life I want.

Teens have a lot of emotion.  Maybe they will try art in some form because of what they bought in the park.  That would be the finishing touch on my good life.
