When you look around and ask what good life is, the most common answer is one with peace and happiness. Money does not buy happiness. You don’t need to have money to get joy. Money can buy friends not friendship etc. We here this very frequently and most of us believe it too. But is it really that simple?! Is money really that unimportant?
I don’t think so!
Money is something you cannot do without. Without it you cannot hope to live a decent life, forget a good life. If money is really that unimportant why are we all running like crazed rats in a rat race? Why can’t we all just sit back and relax and watch the world go by? It is actually unthinkable for us to do that. Then why do we keep harkening about money not being important?
When do you not need money? You need it to put two decent meals on the table. Ask the struggling single mom who works two or even three jobs so that she can take care of her child. Ask the blue collared worker father who strives hard to give the basic comfort of food to his family. Ask what the street bum has to tell you about money. You need money to keep your soul and body together.
You can think of nourishing your soul only after you have enough to nourish your body. Only after you have enough to survive on can you think of being happy.
You can buy soft beds but not sleep with money, they say. Oh really!? Ask the poor guy who sleeps on the pavements covered with newspapers. Ask the families who sleep close to each other on cold winter nights to get some warmth. It is easy to say you don’t need money, but how many of us will willingly give up the comforts we have today.
One small recession had us scurrying to our banks. We were scared that we may not be able to maintain our lifestyles or even met basic needs. If money was really that unimportant why did we all get so worked up about this recession?
There is no doubt money is an important aspect in today’s life. We need plenty to go around, to be able to meet our basic needs. One thing to remember here is that the basic needs for one person may be very different from the basic needs of another. To a struggling single mother basic might be enough food to go around, for a better off single mother basics could mean nutritious food, better schools and education etc.
As one celebrity said money is not important, but it is definitely easier to lie awake in a soft plush bed rather than on the hard park bench. It is more comforting to cry in a limousine rather than in the subway.
It is not possible to dream of the good life if you don’t have enough money to take care of your basic needs. It is only when you have met your basic needs and comfort, can you think of what money cannot buy. Money is essential to take the first steps towards a good life.
