As an adult, with children, going back to school might be farthest from your mind right now. Many adults feel that after they have achieved their basic college degree, it is enough to base everything on experience and build their careers from there. However, many times, a career calls for continuing education to enhance one’s skills and intellect to be able to deal with a higher level position. Sometimes, an adult will suddenly feel that he or she has to go back to school as a way of fulfilling a personal interest and enhancing one’s personality and worldliness. No matter what the reason, this is a time when you may ask yourself, am I still up to going back to school? Schooling then may be different from now, so will I still be able to cope?
These questions you may ask yourself will pertain not only to yourself, but to your family. Your schooling schedule will affect their lives as well so you may have to consider whether they will be prepared for that change as well. Will your schedule affect family time or make you want to consider getting a sitter? These are things you may want to discuss with your partner and your kids. Find out the best times that you can all be together and those times when you will be apart. Someone else may have to take over the regular chores or tasks that you may miss by taking extra hours at school, and find out how you can make up for missing those in other ways. From the very start, it is always best to be open about your decision and work together on allowing everyone to adjust to the change.
Another thing that you should aim at doing, as an adult going back to school, is to remain realistic about your goals and your limitations. Going back to school may mean extra hours outside of class to study, aside from just class time. This may mean that you will spend less time with your family and at home. Instead of thinking you are a super-parent and trying to be a full-time student and full-time parent, be realistic and consider one or two classes on the first semester before adding to the load. You may find that one or two classes is already more than enough to fill your week and still give you time with your loved ones. Make the change slowly and don’t rush into it just because you are excited to be back in the schooling saddle again.
When you are juggling family, school and work, then your schedule book may just become your best buddy. Time management is essential when finding time to work, attend class, cook for your kids, do homework, play ball with your son, do some shopping with your spouse, among a whole long list of things. It may require you to keep tighter schedules, but it is something you will get used to and will help you get more organized.
Most importantly, be sure that you take care of yourself and your health. With your hectic schedule you will need all the health and energy that you can get to keep up with all your obligations. Maintain exercise regimes and stick to a healthy diet. Get rid of bad habits like smoking and drinking and keep your body fit for all the work that is in store in the coming months. And keep some free time open for yourself when you can relax, watch a movie, or hang out with friends to maintain stress-free peace of mind.
