Spending Prudently for a Good Life

Making money is difficult, so why do we spend it so freely? Probably because we feel that it is our reward for working so hard for it, but if we continue this way, nothing will ever be left for our savings. Sometimes splurging on things can make one feel better about a bad situation or splurging is a way of celebrating a happy occasion. Either way, this kind of spending, if not planned, is only one step in ruining a good savings plan and a good savings attitude. Saving money is all about building a habit, or an attitude, towards money that will make one appreciate its value and how much saving it can contribute to a family’s development, security, and overall happiness.

As we go through our lives, there are many things that we do that make us spend more than we could actually save. Mainly, this is due to the fact that much of this money is money that we cannot see and is money that is tied up in seemingly invisible costs like service charges and annual fees. Much of this money is also money that we don’t see because we have developed a bad habit of not accounting for small spending in a proper manner. To spend prudently for a good life it is always advisable to be aware of where your money is going at all times. Every dollar and every penny counts.

One way to save well is to keep tabs on the different bills that come to your home, such as the telephone bill, the electricity, water, etc. This way you will be able to know when you use electricity most and you can further address problem areas in the bills that rise. Also, pay all of your bills on time. When you pay bills late, fees will add up and give you an extra cost to worry about. For credit card bills, try to pay at least double the minimum amount due, or the whole balance, to prevent excess costs in interest charges. Remember, the longer you take to pay off an amount, the more the interest charges will pile on.

When you receive your paycheck, separate at least 30 percent of it for your savings and budget the remainder to fit your bills and daily expenses. If you have any leftover amount by the next payday, always deposit the amount into your savings and keep track of that as well. This way you will know if you need to increase the amount that you separate for your savings.

When you shop for groceries, stick to your shopping list and don’t be tempted to get anything outside of it. This will discipline you to stick to the plan and save more for a good life. When you buy non-perishable goods, you can buy them in bulk so that you get them at a cheaper wholesale price. Know where the cheaper items are sold and plan your shopping trip so that you can get cheaper items in certain stores. Never apply for store credit cards because in the long run you will suffer the high interest charges. Always pay cash when cash is available.

When you follow these sure and simple tips, you will find that you will be spending prudently sooner than you know it. The results will show in the amount of savings that will begin to accumulate in your savings account!
