As we go through life, we collect and accumulate things that mean something to us at some time. However, there will come a time when we realize that the things that we have kept have simply become junk and clutter. Because of this kind of clutter, a person finds it difficult to have a fresh start. They find it difficult because they are not willing to throw anything out due to sentimental reasons or for the simple fact that they think it would be a waste to throw out something that might just come in useful in the future.
If you are one of those people who want to move on beyond all your accumulated junk, it is time to have a fresh and clean start by sorting through your things and getting rid of everything that will keep you from stepping forward. Start by sorting through things that you really don’t need any more. These can be bottles and old papers that have no particular importance. Separate what is recyclable and what should be thrown out as junk.
When you have sorted through things, you will find that you may have stuff that other people may just want. These could be old records, books, or bric-a-brac that you can get rid of as junk but may turn out to be somebody else’s treasure. Have a garage sale and make some money off the stuff that you want to get rid of. Take the money that you make and put it in your savings for a rainy day.
For clothes that you need to get rid of, find friends who may be interested in getting your hand-me-downs. You may find a friend who will fancy your old ski jacket for her next skiing trip. If your friends don’t want your things, donate them to charity or call up the Salvation Army or Goodwill to pick up all that you cannot sell. You will be glad to get rid of stuff that may be bought by someone who needs it in another part of town.
If you have some interesting tchotchkes, consider having a swap meet or party where you, friends and neighbors can get together for an afternoon of socializing and exchange junk that might interest another. These kinds of meets and get-togethers will give you a great opportunity of expanding your social network, while at the same time getting rid of stuff that you no longer need.
There may also be collectible items that you want to let go of but want to offer to a special set of buyers. This is when you can post your rare baseball signed by a famous baseball player online on a site like eBay where people can competitively bid for your item in an online auction. This may be an interesting way to learn how the online system works and how you can use it for future sales.
Whether you are getting rid of special junk, or simply junk, you don’t have to worry too much about where it will go. Just sort it out and you will find that they will eventually find their appropriate destinations when you follow these steps on ways of getting rid of old things for a good life.
